Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is working on the installation of sensor-based manhole monitoring system, which sends alerts regarding the unauthorised opening of manhole covers, besides detection of noxious gases. To this effect, the Board has identified 266 critical manhole locations, which are prone for frequent waterlogging across the city. The sensor-based smart manhole management monitoring system will be taken up as a pilot project.

The system will be helpful to

the Board in many ways. It will trigger an alarm in case of any broken, damage, unauthorised opening of manhole covers and also about manhole cover thefts. This apart, it will aid in overflow detection. The system will measure sewerage level and send an alert to the command control centre, which is to be set up at Khairthabad head office at regular intervals. This will help officials in preventing overflows and take up planned maintenance, said a senior official of HMWSSB.
