Burning of waste in the open is a crime in Telangana, and with immediate effect. Such offences will attract a fine of up to Rs 25,000 as environmental compensation to be recovered as arrears of land revenue by the local bodies concerned.

The Telangana government issued orders to this effect on Monday, in accordance with the guidelines from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued in December last year.

A

blanket ban has been imposed on open burning of waste on lands, including landfill sites, and those involved in such cases will have to cough up an environmental compensation of Rs 5,000 for simple burning and Rs 25,000 for bulk waste burning as per the NGT orders.

The Environmental Compensation thus collected will be used for creating awareness among people on environmental issues and open burning of waste.
