The Transport authorities on Wednesday decided to make Aadhaar card mandatory for registration of all kinds of vehicles in the State. The authorities have decided to make Aadhaar card submission mandatory during sale of used vehicles.

On Wednesday, Transport Minister, P Mahender Reddy directed department officials to strictly implement the Aadhaar card linkages for vehicle registration and sale of used vehicles. The Minister in the meeting with top officials acknowledged that buyers of used vehicles were not coming forward to transfer the bought vehicles to their names.

This was creating a lot of issues during accidents, since the vehicle insurance continues to remain in the name of the previous owner, the Minister said. Moreover, private financing institutions that forcibly take possession of autos and trucks from EMI defaulters were

selling the vehicles to new owners but were not registering their vehicles afresh, Mahender Reddy pointed out.

While directing officials to take up awareness on the issue, Mahender Reddy also directed transport authorities to come up with new rules that will empower authorities to impose steeper penalties on persons who own used vehicles but have not initiated the process of fresh vehicle registrations. In the review meeting it was also decided to update the phone numbers, Aadhar card numbers and addresses of persons who have acquired used vehicles and upload the information on to the department website.

Principal Secretary, Transport, Sunil Sharma, Commissioner of Police, Mahender Reddy, Traffic DCP, Ranganath, Joint Commissioner of Traffic, Panduranga Naik and other top department officials were present.
