57 lakh worth Gulf currency seized at RGIA

Hyderabad: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized foreign currency worth Rs 57 lakh at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Shamshabad. The seized currency includes UAE Dirhams, Saudi Riyals and Omani Riyals which were found in the possession of a passenger who was about to board Emirates flight to Dubai, the DRI officials said on Thursday.

On the night of August 16, the sleuths of DRI intercepted one passenger at RGIA, who after clearing immigration and security checks was about to board Emirates flight to Dubai. On examination of the baggage, foreign currency from three nationalities of Gulf regions, including KSA, UAE and Oman were found.

The passenger who was



interrogated stated that the said currency was obtained from unauthorised dealers and does not belong to him. He stated that it was being carried at the behest of someone for delivery in Dubai.
 
“As the said foreign currency was obtained from unauthorised dealers or persons, which was in violation of FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act), 1999 and regulations of the prohibition imposed under Customs Act 1962 read with FEMA, 1999.

The seized foreign currency is equivalent to 57 lakh in Indian rupees. The passenger had been arrested. Further investigation in the case is in progress,” M K Singh, Additional Director General, DRI, Hyderabad Zonal Unit said.
