Heavy rains continue to lash Telangana State, recording an excess rainfall of 18 per cent during the current season of Southwest monsoon as on Friday. Of the total 31 districts, 10 received excess rainfall of more than 20 per cent and 20 districts recorded normal rainfall. The widespread rains are likely to continue for the next 48 hours under the influence of a low pressure area formed over northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood coupled with an associated cyclonic circulation and another cyclonic circulation over north Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood.

As per the data furnished by the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), the State received an average cumulative rainfall of 25.57 cm against cumulative normal rainfall of 21.72 cm. Of the total 584 mandals, around 256 mandals recorded over 20 per cent excess rainfall when compared to normal rainfall.

Adilabad district received excess rainfall of 54.73 cm which is about 69 per cent more than normal rainfall of 32.44 cm. The districts of Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagtial, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubnagar, Khammam and Nalgonda

also received excess rainfall of more than 20 per cent. Only Siddipet district recorded deficient rainfall of 14.56 cm which is 22 per cent less than the normal rainfall of 18.75 cm.

On Friday, widespread rains occurred at many places across the State with Navipet in Nizamabad district receiving highest rainfall of 5 cm. For the last three days, many places in the State experienced heavy rainfall even as most places witnessed drizzle throughout the day. The drizzle took over on Friday after two days of heavy rains across the State. Traffic jams were a common problem faced by many denizens in Hyderabad city due to drizzle which crippled normal life. Several areas and roads were waterlogged even as rain hampered restoration works.

“Rains are likely to continue for another 48 hours due to impact of low pressure and associated upper air circulation over Bay of Bengal and also another upper air circulation over Chhattisgarh. As a result, heavy to very heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in all the districts,” said a duty officer at regional centre of Indian Meteorological Department.
