In the US Open, world number one Rafael Nadal retired from semi-final while trailing Juan Martin del Potro 7-6, 6-2. Nadal, who had never before retired from a US Open match, showed signs of distress almost from the start as he limped noticeably after a gruelling 69-minute opening set.

It was the second time this year that the world number one has retired from a slam as he also quit during his quarter-final against Marin Cilic at the Australian Open in January.

In the Final, Novak Djokovic will meet Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina

tomorrow.

In the women's singles final,  Japan's Naomi Osaka will face her idol Serena Williams in the final today. Osaka beat American Madison Madison Keys 6-2, 6-4 yesterday and reached first-ever Grand Slam final.

The 20-year-old is also the first female Japanese player to reach a Grand Slam singles final.  Earlier  Serena Williams stormed into the final beating Lavian 19th seed  Anastasija Sevastova 6-3 6-0.

A victory for Serena will equal Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.
