Paris Saint-Germain has sacked Christophe Galtier on Wednesday and have decided to replace him with former Barcelona and Spain manager Luis Enrique despite winning the Ligue 1 campaign this season.

Galtier had signed a two-year contract at PSG when he took over ahead of last season, but his stay has been cut short, mainly due to the club's poor run in the Champions League, where they were eliminated in the round of 16.

Galtier and his son were arrested last week as part of an investigation into alleged discrimination when he was at Nice. The 56-year-old went on to deny the accusations made against him.

PSG have now released a statement announcing the departure of Galtier as their first-team coach.

"Paris St Germain and Christophe Galtier have decided to terminate his contract as first-team coach," PSG said in a statement.

"The club would like to pay tribute to his

professionalism and commitment, which helped the Rouge & Bleu win a historic eleventh French championship title."

PSG were swift to act and appoint Enrique, who had won the treble with Barcelona during the 2014-15 season and guided Spain to the semi-finals of the 2020 European Championship. Enrique has been staying away from management since leaving the post with Spain after their Round of 16 exit from the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Enrique said, as quoted by Reuters, he was delighted to join PSG and said he loved the pressure coming along with the job.

"I am delighted to be here... I do not speak French, but I have started to learn it," Luis Enrique told reporters.

"I love this pressure. Dozens of teams have this same dream, sometimes teams that have more experience than us.

"The Champions League is almost unfair because one bad match and you exit the competition, but that's no excuse for us."
