Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu retains Winter Olympic figure skating gold

Japanese Yuzuru Hanyu became the first figure skater in 66 years to win back-to-back Winter Olympic gold medals in the men's singles event as he won Japan's first gold medal at PyeongChang Games on Saturday. 

Hanyu won the title with 317.85 points, beating compatriot Shoma Uno and multiple world champion Javier Fernandez of Spain to the second and third spots. Hanyu emulated American Dick Button's feats of 1948 and 1952. 

The 23-year-old also became the 1,000th gold medal winner in the history of Winter



Olympics. 

Meanwhile, Marit Bjoergen skied a triumphant final leg to write her name in the Olympic record books, delivering gold for Norway in the women's 4x5 kilometre relay. 

She joined countryman Ole Einar Bjoerndalen as the most successful winter Olympian of all time on 13 medals.

Sweden took silver, two seconds behind, while the Olympic Athletes from Russia came third to take the bronze, 43.3 seconds behind the winners.

Bjoergen received plenty of plaudits from her competitors following her historic achievement.
