Roger Federer has won through to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open for a 14th time, seeing off little-known Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in straight sets on Rod Laver Arena.

The defending champion has made an almost seamless progression to the final eight and notched his 91st singles victory at Melbourne Park, matching his mark at Wimbledon where he has won two fewer matches.

Federer defeated Fucsovics in a tick over two hours on court, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

The victory has set up a quarter-final showdown with Tomas Berdych, with the Czech 19th seed defeating Italian Fabio Fognini in three sets.Berdych, 32, has reached the closing stages at the first major of the year for a seventh time.

Berdych last played in the quarters in Melbourne two years ago but between 2011 and 2016 the former world No.5 was a permanent fixture in the last eight, including consecutive semis in 2014 and 2015.

The Czech

said the conditions for Monday's fourth-round match were better than the early rounds when he played in oppressive heat at times.

In an another match,Rafael Nadal concedes he would have preferred to have cruised through to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in two hours rather than struggled through in four, but said that matches like Sunday's win over Argentine Diego Schwartzman would give him confidence his body could again withstand lengthy matches in the second week of a grand slam.

Nadal will meet sixth-seed Marin Cilic on Tuesday in a quarter-final, the Spaniard's 10th visit to the final eight at Melbourne Park, after grinding his way to a four-set victory against dogged 24th seed Schwartzman, who pushed the world No 1 for three hours and 51 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

"You can't expect easy matches when you play in the big tournaments," Nadal said after his win."Conditions out there were not easy...very humid.
