MS Dhoni has been batting with freedom ever since he passed the captaincy baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He has been in brilliant form in the tournament and that showed in CSK’s match on Friday, April 19 against KL Rahul’s LSG at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Dhoni also hit a 101-metre six to entertain the crowd at the venue.

It also happened to be CSK and Dhoni’s 16th anniversary in the IPL. Back on April 19, 2008, the Super Kings beat the Kings XI Punjab, now Punjab Kings, by 33 runs at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. Dhoni batted at No.4 and scored 2 runs before James Hopes trapped him plumb in front.

As far as the match against LSG is concerned, Dhoni stayed not out on 28 runs off 9 balls with 2 fours and as many sixes as the Super Kings finished with

176 for 6 in 20 overs. Coming to bat at No.8 after Ravi Bishnoi dismissed Moeen Ali in the 18th over, the 42-year-old Dhoni used the long handle to good effect and injected momentum into the innings with some powerful strokes.

In the penultimate over, Dhoni took the attack to left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan, hitting him for a four through deep extra cover followed by a massive six that went 101 metres into the stands. In the last over, Dhoni was severe on Yash Thakur, who has a 5-wicket haul in the IPL to his name. The veteran made sure that CSK scored 19 runs in the last over.

Dhoni has hit 65 sixes thus far in the 20th over of the IPL and that shows how dominating and brutal he has been. In the ongoing edition of the T20 league, Dhoni has 87 runs from 5 innings at a strike-rate of 255.88. He also completed 5000 runs as a wicketkeeper in the IPL.
