An air hostess allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of her residence in south Delhi’s Hauz Khas area on Friday afternoon. The family of the victim alleged that her husband and in-laws have been harassing her for a dowry for the past few months. The deceased was identified as Anissia Batra. She was employed in German airline Lufthansa.

The family also alleged that it was a murder case. “The police considered registering a case of dowry death, but my sister was murdered. She was pushed off the terrace, but the police is choosing to believe only Singhvi’s version,” the victim’s brother said. Though the victim’s family also claimed that it was a murder case, DCP Romil Baaniya said that the woman’s texts, that she had sent to her husband, don’t indicate that it was a case of murder.

“Singhvi has told us that around 4.30pm on Friday, he received a message from his wife who informed him that she was going to jump to her death. He claimed to have run upstairs to check, but found

the terrace door locked from the outside,” the DCP said.

Anissia’s brother Karan Batra also alleged that his sister had called him up on several occasions and had told him that she was being beaten up and abused for dowry. “Singhvi (victim’s husband) would hit my mother too. Sometimes, my sister would be left locked out of her home,” Batra alleged, adding, “Last month, my parents had to come from Chandigarh. My father, who served in the Army for over four decades, filed a complaint on June 27. They had to go back because of my mother’s medical condition.”

He also said that days before the suicide, their father had submitted a letter in the Hauz Khas police station which said that Sanghvi would be held responsible if his daughter gets hurt in any way.

Anissia was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead. The police have launched a probe in the case. A case under section 304B (dowry death) of IPC has been registered at Hauz Khas police station.
