Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi launched the 9th round of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions in New Delhi yesterday. Addressing the gathering, Mr Joshi said a total of 26 coal mines will be offered in this round. He said the total consumption of electricity in the country is going to double by 2030. He stressed on energy security, keeping sustainability in mind. He said that India is doing exceptionally well in reducing carbon emissions.

The Minister highlighted that India is a bright spot right now and an engine for the world economy. He said India is the fastest-growing economy and is poised to become the third-largest economy in two to three

years.

The auctions would enhance the participation of more private players in the coal sector, fostering competition, efficiency, and innovation and contributing to sustainable development. The eligibility criteria have been eliminated to remove any technical or financial barriers to participation with no restrictions on the sale or utilisation of coal.

The Coal Minister also gave away the Star Rating Awards to Coal and Lignite mines. The criteria for the awards included seven comprehensive modules such as Mining Operations, Environmental factors, Adoption of Technologies-Best Mining Practices, and Safety and Security.
