Daulatram Jogawat, a Neemuch-based inspector underwent a series of tests at Saifee Hospital on Monday to diagnose his obesity.

Jogawat, 58, who works with the Madhya Pradesh police and weighs 180kg, was mocked by socialite and author Shobhaa De. She had on February 21 tweeted his picture with the tagline, ‘heavy police bandobast in Mumbai today.’ In response, the inspector said that his weight gain resulted from medical complications, and not overeating.
After Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, chairman of Institute of Minimal Access Surgical Sciences & Research Centre at the hospital and his team at Center for Obesity and Digestive Surgery, approached him for treatment, Jogawat and his son came to Mumbai. The policeman was flooded with invitations from hospitals across the country for treatment after De’s tweet went viral and he chose to come to Mumbai.

“He is undergoing a series of tests at Saifee Hospital which will help us diagnose the diseases he suffers from and decide if bariatric surgery can help him.

We will be soon reviewing his reports and after that we will be able to decide on a course of action,” said Dr Lakdawala.

While to HT, Jogawat said that he started gaining weight after a gall bladder surgery in 1993. “I developed an insulin imbalance after the surgery and began to gain weight. It’s not because I overeat,” he said.

His seniors in MP said that despite his weight issues, Jogawat has always been a competent officer and has won many accolades after his recruitment in the year 1979. Jogawat has been praised for his investigations into anti-narcotics operations and preventing crimes against women as he is also a part of Shiv Ratri duty at the Neemuch control room.

“He is a hardworking inspector who dedicatedly works 12 hours a day even though he has medical complications. We are in touch with the doctors and hospital administration for his treatment and MP police will help Jogawat fund his treatment,” said his superior and assistant superintendent of police, MP, Rakesh Sagar.
