A carpenter allegedly hit on a roommate's face repeatedly with a frying pan while he was asleep and then stabbed him in the abdomen twice, killing him.

During the hearing held in the Court of First Instance on Thursday, it was understood that the 56-year-old Indian man then tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself in the abdomen. He was charged with premeditated murder.

The Dubai Police operation room was alerted about the incident shortly before 9pm on December 5, 2016. "We went to the crime scene in a labour accommodation in Al Quoz.

"The victim's body was lying in a pool of blood. His face was unrecognisable due to severe beating. Blood splatters were on the body, wall and floor," a Bur Dubai police lieutenant told the public prosecution investigators.

Another police lieutenant was instructed to go to the hospital where the defendant was rushed after he stabbed himself in the abdomen, in an attempted suicide.

"He confessed to killing the victim to whom he held a grudge over personal disputes. He smashed his face with a frying pan repeatedly and when the victim tried to stand up, the accused hit him again and then stabbed

him twice. The victim died prior to the arrival of paramedics due to severe beating," the officer said.

"The accused claimed it was over honour. Then he said the victim used to click his pictures while he slept and later circulate them among other workers to make fun of him."

The defendant admitted he then stabbed himself with another knife but could not take the pain and screamed for help. He was taken to hospital.

The foreman noticed the two men were absent from work. He told the accommodation supervisor to check on them and that is how he discovered the victim's body lying on his bed in his room.

According to the forensic report, the cause of death was the severe skull fractures and the heavy brain haemorrhage. DNA traces found on the pan handle matched with others lifted from the street where the defendant tried to kill himself. The police seized the pan and the knife which were found left near the bed.

The accused admitted during prosecution investigation that he planned to kill the victim the night before he attacked him. He claimed the victim used to bully him, threaten to beat him up, take his pictures and make fun of him.
